When I hiked the Thunder River to Deer Creek loop, Tapeats was standing white water, maybe 3 foot waves. This was in late May several years ago, maybe a decade or more. We chose to not try to cross the creek, but to hike along the alternate route up and above the creek along a precipitous ledge. I will follow this with hope in my heart.

This doesn't sound good, but I'll be hoping for something better than expected. They did get their packs off, which offers some hope.
Fast water is probably the only thing I'm more scared off than cliffs.

We did the North Bass in May 1995 and turned back at Shinumo Creek due to raging water. The top layers of the North Rim are porous so when a hard layer is encountered the water comes rushing out thus Thunder River which feeds Tapeats Creek. This winters snow cover is melting at rapid rate. We will be hiking Kanab Creek in four weeks. Have done this before in late May with no issues.
Hopefully the two hikers are found safe.

Sad stuff, I heard about this on NPR this morning. The Grandmother and their 14 year old grandson are still missing.

How tragic. Curious what it means that they found their packs, though? I guess it gives a sliver of hope?

Curious what it means that they found their packs, though? It means that they were able to shed weight that may pull them underwater. But, it also means they don't have gear to help with survival.

It means that they were able to shed weight that may pull them underwater. But, it also means they don't have gear to help with survival. I've only had one bad stream experience. It was in the White Mtns NH. I was wearing a large butt pack and slipped crossing a stream that was about a foot a half-ish+ deep and fast moving. The pack acted as a float at least at first. The biggest problem was the pack greatly increased the water drag. I did my best to keep my head upstream and rolled to the closest side. As I was washed downstream I got well pounded by rocks. One butt cheek got really slammed and turned completely black and blue. I got out about fifty feet upstream of a twenty foot waterfall. Unfortunately I was on the far side from my hiking buddy and he was like no way was he crossing after that. I did make the crossing back successfully but I did throw my pack to him before I started. The force of drag, increased by the pack, in the fast moving water was overwhelming large. So maybe them being separate from their packs is a good thing at least in the short term. I just checked the weather and it looks like highs near 60F but lows near freezing. I hope this ends up being an amazing story of survival due to outdoors knowledge.

This is tragic news. Will Merrell Co.'s private resources continue the search?
