The NPS has called of the search From the link: the search has not been called off. Limited to one boat and a few people. Odds of a happy ending are remote. That's true.

So it seems they've indeed transitioned to recovery from rescue.

Sad, sad event and sadder conclusion. Last April, we followed the Monument Creek drainage up to the start of the redwall to do an impromptu search for a girl we had heard went missing from the rim. I followed the search even after we returned home and the sad conclusion was Diana Zacarias's remains being found below Pima Point on August 3rd. The canyon is the most incredible place I've been, and also the most dangerous. I've slipped on pebbles over slickrock in a bad spot and could have easily went over. My wife got a case of heat exhaustion on another trip. It seems even the most experienced can encounter tragedy in the GC. I can safely say I've never taken a place we've backpacked more seriously, and we have been out below zero many times, and in some violent weather above 12,000 feet. This news isn't a deterrent , but it is a wake-up, or at least a strong reminder.

We've lost two forum members there, one from heat stroke and the other on the River. It isn't a place to take lightly.

We've lost two forum members there, one from heat stroke and the other on the River. It isn't a place to take lightly. Did not know that. I remember the story from a few years ago about the two college kids--runners--who went out for a light hearted 20 mile backcountry run through the middle canyon. Heat stroke claimed one of them.

There are a lot of things that bind this online community. Some of it is opinions, but most of it is just as real as things can be.

Mary Phyl was the other. She lived in Flagstaff and used to run a grocery store in Cameron. Her and her husband hiked much of the Canyon in their spare time and she was part of more than one forum hike. Her health was deteriorating and they decided to take one last run down the Colorado. Unfortunately, their raft flipped, she got hung and before they could get her loose, she'd died from what was hypothermia.
