Hi all! I just joined the forum and wanted to say hello. My wife and I live in Huntington Beach, CA, and do a lot of day hikes in OC and the San Gabriels. We also do a lot of climbing and are dipping our toes into the waters of mountaineering. We plan to do our first real backpacking trip (two weeks or so) later this summer, in preparation for the A.T. next year. Anyway, I have lurked on the forums for a while now, and just wanted to officially join in!

Welcome, Logan.
Don't be shy about asking questions or getting ideas of where to do some hiking. We're from pretty much all over the country.

hikerjer It definitely feels like biting off quite a bit, but we will really only get one chance for a trip while working our current jobs, which we will be until jumping off for the AT next spring. We really want to have a dry run long enough to hopefully work out most of the kinks before then.

Hey there green, welcome. We're practically neighbors - I'm in Anaheim Hills, where there is good hiking right out my front door. Good luck in your endeavors.

Welcome from Chicago, where I enjoy Gladiator movies, preparing for the Apocalypse, and origami. I also enjoy backpacking and hiking.
Glad to see you folks in CA finally getting some moisture.

Glad to see you folks in CA finally getting some moisture. Our climate doesn't seem to know the meaning of moderation. Check out the recent info shared in the regional section. Not a good year for through-hikers, or those who have to backpack in July.

Welcome, and have fun planning and doing your adventures. I live with access to the AT within a few minutes. Only sectioned hike, but I can help with goodly portions and especially the Vt. section where I have done the entirety. I hope your trip this summer doesn't include too much mountaineering. My wife and I did a week in the Sierra in Aug. 2011 and had a few tough stream crossings and some snowfield traverses . We went off trail to fish a rarely visited lake that has Golden Trout and found the majority of it still ice covered. I imagine this year may be similar, as the "average" snow pack has also been roughly doubled. I'm a relative newcomer to this site , but was helped greatly planning a trip to Ca., (Thanks again, Rebecca) for which we leave tomorrow night. Enough with the rain, now, we've seen enough precip here in the east. The 4 backcountry camps in Point Reyes National Seashore for us, then car camping our way to San Diego. That'll be me waving, as we pass on the 405.

Howdy! Before that two week trip, you might just try a couple of overnighters on weekends. You'll learn a lot. Discomforts that are bearable overnight can then be avoided on your longer trip.

Welcome Logan. This board is a great way to learn about backpacking, camping etc... One suggestion I might make is to follow some thru hikers that are hiking the trail right now. Here is a link:
www.trailjournals.com/
It is fun to follow some of them on their trail journal page.
Try reading a trail journal form 2015, "Airlock" was her trail name. Great writer and she completed the hike. It was fun following along with her via trail journals.
You can send them messages via that site & can pick their brains about what they are going through. Good luck, and once again Welcome!!
