Greetings, Base Campers…
Anyone here know anything about Williston, Vermont? Nice area? Lots of outdoors activities nearby? Cost of living? Housing? There’s a gig there that looks interesting. I’m thinking about applying for the position. Any thoughts/comments are greatly appreciated. I have never been to New England. Thx.

Ridiculous amounts of the outdoors available. At one time living in or just outside of Burlington would have been a great thing. The traffic, crime , high real estate, has altered that a bit. If you don't ski, or have some kind of winter activity you may want to reconsider. The Champlain Valley is one of my favorite places to bike trip, but winters are pretty brutal. When I regularly winter backpacked/snowshoed in Northern Vermont and NH, I thought of moving there, as I was in a band with some guys from the area and gigged in Burlington. I'd seriously think about what you'd do to get through winter and mud season, it's a lot of the year. I live 100 miles south where it's a bit warmer and less snowy.

When my twins were born 12 years ago we considered moving to the Burlington area. There is so much there. Besides all the outdoor offerings for me the tech businesses and microbreweries were a big draw. We decided against it when my partner heard the average morning temperature in Jan and Feb is 5F. She said no way.

Crime and real estate are my main concerns. A friend of mine left Burlington for Saint Albans. I’ve heard quality of life has declined in Burlington. Williston is the new suburb for business and growth? I do enjoy xc-skiing and snowshoeing. Fortunately, the company I’m looking at has 180+ locations across the country, so I would have the opportunity to put in for transfers down the road. I look at Williston as a place to start, then move around. Thank you all for your replies! Happy Trails, DR

Like San Francisco, Denver, Portland, and more will be derided by a certain half of this country just like the Burlington area is for its "progressive" politics of compassion, inclusion, and fairness; but those deriders will deceitfully/hypocritically keep letting those cities subsidize them on a per capita basis.
Communities like Burlington give many hope, but they are of course not for everyone. A high school buddy of mine from Woodstock, VT loved Burlington; made Phish's first stages, etc. He however chose to raise his family here in The Hole. Sven all I can speculate is that perhaps some of the things you're hoping to leave behind might be alive and well in the Burlington area. Bernie and much of Vermont see themselves as Independent but recent elections demonstrate that independence is predicated on something many that see themselves as independent will have little but contempt for. Yes, you might come across homeless people doing drugs, pooping, etc. around Burlington. Only you can decide whether all the benefits outweigh the costs of compassion.

^^^Preachy preach, take it to the TPA.
Downriver - My daughter is considering going to UVM. You'll never run out of places to hike, xc ski, or snowshoe (and maybe give downhill skiing a try?). Crime - sure, RELATIVE TO THE REST OF VERMONT. Same stuff you'll see in any urban area nowadays.

I’ve lived in Denver for a long time. I’ve never been shot, stabbed or murdered. Could it happen? Sure. Maybe I’m lucky. Or maybe I’m just too badass looking for people to mess with me. Burlington Vermont? I’d rather live in south Chicago. Lol.

I don't know much about the area, but my wife went to college near there. When I asked her she said: "Gray! The Winter has gray skies for much of the time." Might be a consideration for some?

Totally skewed by low population and that City-Data defines rural towns as "cities". The other places my daughter is looking at (Albany, Binghamton, and Cornell[Ithaca]) have much higher crime rates. Ithaca has the most similar demographics to Burlington. PS - According to the data, Burlington has similar crime rates as other dangerous New England cities such as Montpelier, Manchester, NH and Bangor, ME.

Regarding crime I am aware it’s Vermont so all things are relative. I was more concerned with the city’s lack of response to homelessness and quality of life issues. I actually applied for several positions with the company in different locations across the country. I’ve never been to that part of the country so I thought this position would get my foot in the door with the company and allow me to explore a new region of the country. Regards, DR

"Gray! The Winter has gray skies for much of the time." I haven't spent much time in VT, but went to college in New London, CT, and this was very much my experience. It was cold, grey, and damp much of the year, and the lack of sunlight really got to me. Of course, I was coming from central Texas, not the PNW, so this might not be a big deal to you.

That was another appealing reason for me. One gets the culture of a college town combined with the great outdoors. Regards, DR
