In addition to Iceland, this is one that has been on my bucket list for awhile. Anyone been there? I'd like to discuss logistics, bears, and skeeters.

Hmm....
What trail(s) are you looking at?
I've never been, but it certainly looks interesting.

I haven't been, but should be traversing Gros Morne NP on the Newfoundland island later this summer. Not dissimilar landscapes judging by photos, a little bit more vegetation (tuckamore) on the island and a little more alpine up on the Labrador tip.

I haven't been, but should be traversing Gros Morne NP on the Newfoundland island later this summer. Another bucket list hike for me. I was in NFL way, way back when and thought the place was beautiful. Can you share your planning for the trip? I started looking at it two summers ago, but was a bit overwhelmed with some of the requirements.

As far as excursions I've planned, it's actual one of the simpler ones. I'm assuming you want to know about the North Rim and Long Range traverses... - Make your reservation with the Park by calling 1-709-458-2417. Reservations opened on February 1 this year. I put our names down that very day as the routes can be popular. There is a small reservation fee.
- Make reservations with one of the few accommodations or campgrounds in the Rocky Harbour/Norris Point area for the pre-/post-hike nights. Also, reserve a rental car (see below).
- Grab a flight into Deer Lake, NFLD two days before your trailhead date. Air Canada and WestJet can get you there. Depending on where you depart from, you may layover in Toronto, Montreal, and/or St. John's.
- Rent a car at the airport. Budget had worked out to be cheapest last I checked. I was considering inquiring with a local outfitter as to the cost of getting them to taxi us between the airport, pre-/post-accommodations, and park given a rental would mainly sit in the TH parking lot. However, the rental would be handier for our group as we'll want to get out to explore the Rocky Harbour, Norris Point, and Bonnie Bay areas. And I'm thinking the cost of taxiing us about is likely to run about as much as the car anyways.
- The day before your TH date you must show up to the Visitor's Centre by 14:30 for a mandatory orientation followed by an orienteering exam. Calculate some bearings, prove you know how to use a compass and map, and you're in the clear to proceed with the hike. You also need to pay your permit fees this day. And you should probably organize either a pick-up or drop-off as it is a through hike, not a loop. I think we'll drop-off, that way we can simply plop into the car and find hot showers when we finish.
- Go Hike.
- If you get the opportunity before or after, drop into St. John's for a day or two and enjoy the true East Coast Canadiana. And get Screeched in.
There are way-points with tent pads and bear lockers, but you are not obligated to stay at these. Bear cans are a must if you avoid the tent pads as there are bears in the park, although some have reported hanging the food off the side of the cliffs as an alternative to a tree (at the risk of losing your food to the bottom of the fjord). The park is known for high moose activity, nary a group goes through without seeing any. NFLD is notorious for battering folk with all four seasons in a day, so prep for crummy weather.

While / if you're visiting St. John's (Avalon Peninsula), check out the East Coast Trail. It's been recently expanded to about 200 miles in length. Info & photos at www.ectthruhike.com

For what it's worth, just last week I booked our rental car (prices jumped $100 CAD in the space of a month) and just today I booked our accommodation, getting the last double room that particular place had. The front-country camping was only about 60-85% booked up, but I opted for soft beds and hot showers. So I guess the moral of the story is make all your reservations fairly early if you're interested in Gros Morne.

I've finally put up a lengthy trip report for Gros Morne. If the Torngats photos are any indication, then they'd be quite similar to Gros Morne with much less of that pesky tuckamore. A worthwhile endeavor for certain.
