In this scene you see my Kelty external pack. I sold it a few years later to a guy from work who was hiking up Kilimanjaro. Also, you see my old hickory staff. It was on every hike for 24 years from 1983 when I cut down the hickory sapling to 2007 when I switched to trekking poles for the first time. The staff stands by my bed, now. The location is Bear Canyon in the Huachuca Mountains of southern Arizona. It's Thanksgiving 1994 The elevation is around 7600 feet. The Mexican border is six miles south, as the crow flies.

The Penrose Trail, Trail 38, about 3 Raven miles from my office, comes up about 3,000 feet in 11 miles. This portion is within the first 2 miles and is motorized trail in the summer and deeper winter. It is my favorite conditioning hike in the shoulder season, like this one in the first snows of October. [Bighorn NF - WY] Low December sun in Death Valley NP just before sunset and return to camp. Panamint Dunes area. December 28 2015 - yep that is winter with a tolerable 53 degrees F

k9education, your dogs are real "team players!" I'm enjoying all the photos, especially the quiet, peaceful scenes. They're refreshing during these almost last days of Summer, especially when the humidity creeps up and the temps soar.

Those 4 (now 3) are inseparable. 1,000+ miles on the trail together every year makes for a lot of bonding time.

I know they're not huskies, but given their strength and experience, do you ever run them as a sled team? Just curious.

No, but I've had many people pass by and joke about it. On a serious note though, sledding is one of the things I have campaigned against as an animal rights advocate due to the rampant cruelty in the "sport."

I've heard so often of the cruelty, but there are so many deniers, and alleged advocates insisting that the dogs are well treated, that vet assistance is available at Iditarod milestones, etc. However, they're not going to admit to maltreatment. Just did some quick searching and realized that sled dogs are considered "livestock" and therefore subject to a different standard of care. So it seems that legislative action to change that category might be one of the steps to address the abuses. Is this how you're involved? Do you work with an animal rights group? I would think there's a bigger impact when a group is involved; it's easy to ignore one sole person.
As to it being a "sport", I have no personal grounds on which to opine, but animals can so easily be the brunt of cruelty whether they're working dogs or not. And when money and the prestige of winning are at stake, I can understand that less than compassionate mushers might go over the edge and abuse the dogs.
We are supposed to be their guardians, not their jailers.

Ice-up in the river is fascinating to this girl from mild climes. Frozen discs heading downstream, rubbing up against the ice creeping out from shore.
The river is tidal, even here, 40 miles inland (but only 27 feet above sea level). The white ice is the part that that got "stranded" when the water level dropped as the tide went out.
Early winter sunset.
