If there was ever a book written that is right up my alley, this is it. It combines my two greatest passions; wilderness and theology. The author, a Presbyterian minister, loves to go on solo backpacking trips, taking along with him the writings of some of the great spiritual thinkers, and experiencing those writings in God's creation. These are not just Christian writers, but include Ghandi, Thick Nhat Hanh, and Rumi, as well as folks like Kierkegaard, John of the Cross, Therese of Lisieux, and Martin Luther. Each chapter pairs a backpacking experience with a writer and a theological theme. I found it quite interesting, and really enjoyed the book, though it is rather unfocused and disjointed at times. I really enjoy reading accounts of spiritual encounters in the wilderness, and many of his trip reports are quite good, and I enjoyed learning about some writers that I was not very familiar with. Nothing too earth-shaking, just good fun reading. This will not be everyone's cup of tea, but for those who combine an interest in nature and spirituality (attn: cweston), this is a must-read.
