I really like the design of the Sierra Designs Flash series, where you have more of an awning than a full dome rain fly. Any similar designs that you're recommend? Preferably not much more than $300? Will mostly be using this for weekend backpacking in moderate weather, splitting the load with a buddy.

TarpTent Double Rainbow can be pitched in either storm or porch. Is the door on the Flash water proof? (blowing raining). Lunar Duo by six moons? has an overhanging awning, but I think it may need to be closed when blowing rain - but I haven't used one. Black Diamond's HiLight but not completely waterproof (fabric can wet thru in a long rain - I think) but is breathable poles attract condesation, also awning is not good in wind though , and pitching in wind rain is not that great. When opening wet door do you drop it into the tent or outside (getting the inside of the door rained on etc.) You can buy a vestibule for it or you could for the LightHouse ( I had the LightHouse no longer made). Better view than DR, if you want to look up. The Flash is heavier. Glad u posted this, as I like a tent you can see out when waiting out storms. Not sure how SD handles the wind with its awning but it shows it in a wind tunnel. www.basegear.com/big-agnes-scout-ul-2-s13.htmlOh then there is this: www.cascadedesigns.com/msr/tents/essential-series/flylite/product

I think that SD tried to come up with something a bit different, a tent that has some rain protection fully open and that does not require to go outside to close it down. A bit of a fine balance between having a deep enough beak and one that catches too much wind also having a flat wall under it when closed up. There are several tents that offer a good view with the door/vestibule panels open but less rain protection in that mode. Given that I use Tarptents and am part of the brand, my tent with views is the SS2 (I always use trekking poles so at 46oz it is a light tent for me) because it can be closed down from fully open very quickly and still has a floor inside the drip line : if I were not using trekking poles I would probably look at the Cloudburst 3. Great views when open : but offering good wind/rain protection when closed down : franco@tarptent

So many options! Thanks for the help. There's something I like a lot about all of them.
