My daughters boyfriend(possible son in law) plays for the University of Missouri they play 3 games against UK in late April, I'm planning to come down for the weekend and have two questions first I'm looking for a basic hotel near the university it will be just me and possibly my son so it doesn't have to be fancy, second I'll have most of saturday on my own as the game isn't until 6:00PM I'd like to find a hike nearby anything that is interesting and shows off some local scenery, I always travel with a flyrod so mixing both would be awesome or just a local pond or stream would be fine too. any suggestions would be appreciated. MS
p.s. I will be in town Fri,Sat nights and am always up for a beer or local beverage and some conversation.

clip, Lexington is not far from Red River Gorge Geologic Area and Natural Bridge State Park. This hiking mecca has the highest concentration of natural stone arches east of the Mississippi. The options for one day are too numerous to list here.

Thats just what I Was looking I live in Chicagoland and have driven the 6+ hours to RRG about a dozen times in the last 25 years. If you decide to hike at Natural Bridge State Park, I recommend the following route: Rock Garden Trail up to Natural Bridge; Ascend bridge and turn left across bridge To Lookout Point & Lover's Leap Descend steeply past Needles Eye Hike Battleship Rock trail back to Bridge Ascend Bridge, then return to Lodge Via Balanced Rock Trail Partway down via needles stairway is a small arch (Needles Eye) that is no longer in the official trail map or information. You have to break the rules a little by going around the wooden railing to find this little gem which can't be seen from the established trail. It's worth exploring this area before descending the longer section to the Battleship Rock trail. This hike takes about 3 hours or more to enjoy. If you have more time you could hike to nearby Whittleton Arch (easy 2.5 miles roundtrip) or drive the Chimney Top road in RRG for even shorter hikes to see the view into the Gorge from Chimney Top and/or to visit Princess Arch & Sky Bridge. The earlier you start your day, the more you can do. You can buy a good trail map at the Shell gas station in Slade. Exit 33 off the Mountain Parkway is the gateway to RRG. Miguel's Pizza is great place to grab a bite to eat where the hikers & rock climbers hang out. If you think you'll want to come back for longer hikes to really explore RRG, some of the coolest hikes are not on the official trails (but well traveled nevertheless). Here are some links you might find useful: to Red River Gorge.com describes several hikes. Outragegis Maps show the unofficial trails. Ky.wilderness.com is a forum used by the hikers who know RRG the best.

It's an easy 4 hour drive for me to get to the area, perfect for a 3 weekend, I'm sure its quite busy in the season might have to plan week day outings. Thanks for the information I will definitely try the local pizza.
