Hey all, As students at the TU Delft we're investigating the possibility of the production of a hiking watch with GPS for TomTom (the company that produces navigation devices for on the road and for athletes). To investigate what future users think about such a kind of product and what the most important attributes are, we would like to ask you to fill in this questionnaire. Some of the store names are in Dutch so please ignore that. The link to the questionnaire is attached. Thanks for your cooperation and time! linkRobin, ilovehiking

The Tom Tom watch on your survey looks interesting, but it doesn't have the functions marked on the buttons. I'm not sure if I'd actually buy any of them. Replaceable batteries would be nice for longer trips and the size of the display on the cheapest Garmin eTrex is much larger than any watch.

Thanks for your input! We will most certainly improve the styling and thus also the buttons and your suggestion will be considered.

I finished the survey. It was not designed very well and I felt I would have to either own the products or have done extensive research to accurately give an opinion.
But, I must say how difficult it is to judge reliability by looking at a picture. I ended up using two criteria for that question 1) Apparent waterproofing of the buttons and the lack of moving parts.
Under the question "Map accuracy/ reliability. How accurate/reliable do you consider these products?" Again all we have is a picture of the watch face. The Garmin showed just the time and/or date. The Tom Tom showed its color topo map with location arrow. Suunto showed the most detail to include elevation, time, speed, etc. (using numbers/letters vs just graphics) so I gave it the highest score for that category.
While I like the idea of the ease of use of a GPS watch, it's greatest benefits would be weight, battery life and other watch-like attributes. Being mostly a trail hiker with maps, probably the most useful aspect of a GPS watch would to keep track of my distance, speed and time.
Good luck with the product.

I think DD summed it up for me. I have no experience with any of these products, so could not judge accuracy or reliability. A "N/A" option would have been good for those questions.

Hi desertdweller,
it is indeed difficult to judge reliability and accuracy by a picture; the only way of knowing after all is using the product. We therefore thought about providing the same information as can be found when buying these kinds of products in store. Moreover, the TomTom concept is still an unfinished concept and needs therefore more investigation -that's why we are doing this research-. Thanks for your reply, every reaction is more than welcome as we're still in the development-phase.

The TomTom looks much like a driving GPS rather than a backpacking GPS.

The TomTom looks much like a driving GPS rather than a backpacking GPS. I don't think the Tom Tom watch face shown would be the end product. It's still in the design stage.

The watch face is far too small for any sort of navigation using topographic information so for most hiking it'd be rather useless. Hiking is nothing like on-road navigation with the exception of on trails exclusively and even then having a readable indication of the topography would be critical.
