My youngest son, age 24, flies in from Savannah this afternoon after completing his cross country, three month, 5000+ mile solo bike tour. He spent a total of one night in a bed during the trip. He said it was the best experience of his life. His first time ever for an extended period of time on a bike. His longest ride prior to the tour was 50 miles in a day. I think it's an accomplishment to be proud of.

Very cool! Lots of stories to tell upon his return, I don't doubt.

Only one night in a bed is amazing for a trip of that length.

I have thought about his trip a few times recently and wondered how it went, or if he even started once you couldn't go along. I know you must be proud and relieved to have it succeed so well

You're right. We had planned on doing this together but knee surgery in March prevented me from going and he wasn't about to stay home after all the saving and planning. Next year is my turn, hopefully.

Wow. Can you give a few cliff's notes? Where did he start/finish? General route/places he went through? Interestingness?

How is your knee coming along? Actually, it's coming along very well. I wouldn't say it'a 100% but it feels strong and doesn't hold me back while hiking or biking at all. It is a bit stiff in the mornings and although it doesn't exactly hurt, at times I'm very well aware that something was done to it - more of a sensation than anything. I guess the real test will be ski season this witer but I' optimistic. At this point I'm glad I had it done.

Can you give a few cliff's notes? I dropped him off in Seaside (Portland), OR on July 17th. From there he rode south to San Francisco across to Yosemite, to Great Basin National Park and then down to the Grand Canyon. Thence to Albuquerque, through Kansas to St. Louis, Nashville, eastern South Carolina and Savannah. He best experiences were in at the Grand Canyon and the KAYT Trail in Missouri although he said the all the great people he met were among the best parts. Worst experiences were all weather related - Kansas (40 mph headwinds), Nevada (105 degree temps) and western Tennessee (four days of rain from the hurricane). The only time he was frightened at all was in Missouri when he was awakened in the middle of the night by noise outside his tent. He looked out and discovered a mother skunk with two young ones about three feet from him. He didn't dare move for 20 minutes. All in all, just a great experience. He's already making plans for next summer. I suggested he get a job first. Time for the real world.
