Hello everyone, I am a travel writer and most of my work circles around volunteer traveling abroad. Gap year travelers, backpackers, and students interested in volunteering abroad can find details here. Any information related to volunteer traveling, destinations, programs, placement organizations, etc. can be asked. You can also read some of my work here for related information: www.volunteeringsolutions.com/blog/

I noticed your most recent blog post was on sea turtle volunteer work/travel. Around here, south Florida, volunteers mark off sea turtle nests on the beaches and you can buy specialty license plates to help protect endangered sea turtles. In the north part of the county there is the Loggerhead Marinelife Center whose mission is conservation of Florida's coastal ecosystems with a special focus on threatened and endangered sea turtles.I will occasionally run into a giant sea turtle on late night walks on the beach, they are definitely a relic.

Most certainly they are. And i believe, it's for this that such conservation initiatives are necessary.
So you do volunteer traveling?

No,I guess I am older and more settled now but still dream of traveling abroad. One of my former bike touring partners did use this program wwoofinternational.org/how-it-works/ while bike touring from Prudhoe Bay,Ak to Tierra del Fuego,Argentina. In fact as I recall he only made it as far as Central America because he was spending so much time volunteering and interacting with natives and locals in the areas he passed through...

I understand your point there. However, since i can sense that the urge of traveling places in you still persists, i would always suggest to take your chances. for the matter of fact, volunteer travelling is one of the most sought after and, mind you, cheaper way to travel. Plus, of course, the mental tranquility which one gets by helping those in need and making a difference in the society. As a traveler myself, i would love you to live your dreams of traveling abroad, and not let them get buried. let me know if i can help. I can always suggest you places and programs according to your budget and feasibility.
Good Luck!

Most of my travel dreams involve exploring remote mountainous areas by bicycle or on foot which in and of itself is a cheap way to travel.Areas such as the Alps,Southern Alps,Chilean Patagonia,Lofoten Islands and Sikhote-Alin forest. The areas where I could most see myself volunteering would be either southern Chile, where I have read about a number of volunteering opportunities as I have read journals of cycling, hiking, paddling, skiing etc. or perhaps ecological volunteering in the far east of Russia's nature reserves. But,it would be more as a means of making a difference than based on need...

Hi,
I never do volunteering, I wondering how the volunteers get money from this activity? is there any foundation pay them or they pick up from their pocket?

I would have thought the idea of volunteering meant you don't receive remuneration. From my experience (second-hand), typically a volunteer is given room and board in exchange for whatever work is being performed. This is based on a friend's farmhand volunteering in Chile.
If you're volunteering for, say, a mission building schools or churches, I have no clue what they'd help you with outside of room and board. I'm sure Dave, if he's still around, can pipe in?

Hey amaruq it really depends. There are many programs where you pay-to-play (ie. you need to either raise funds or pay a fee to participate in the volunteer program). Then there's other programs where you volunteer in return for room & board. Then there's programs like WWOOFing or Helpx, which are totally different where you work for a local and in return get rooms & board (sometimes even an additional stipend). This is really classified under working abroad rather than volunteering. Hey dave if you are still active on this thread I'd love to chat about volunteering more with you. You might like to contribute some thought leadership on our site.
