Interesting. I certainly hope the rangers have noted his behaviors over the last few years and can use the findings to encourage the current 3 to stay as well as attract more. It is a little at odds with my nature to let nature be, but the benefit to this species, and to the island scientists are trying to encourage the birds to populate, are undeniable.
I'll suppose a hero.

My neighborhood pub has 2-3 Nigels every afternoon. Nigel is a hero in the sense that it tells a lot about imprinting based on colors and profiles among us animals. The species has somewhat survived with this behavior. It also may be a harbinger of others with the inability to adapt to conditions in the face of change. How many species do we control by goofing them with sterile mates or suppressed hormones? Nigel was goofed with concrete mate and died with his genes.
