Two of my friends and I are planning 4-6 day backpacking trip somewhere around Eastern Utah, Northern Arizona and New Mexico, or Southwestern Colorado around the new year. We are from Minnesota and are decently experienced backpackers, however we don't know much about the trails in this area. Any suggestions for a destination? Preferably a destination where all we would need are hiking boots (no crampons etc.). What are the weather conditions going to be like at that time of year? Anything special we should prepare for? We will only have one car so a thru hike isn't really an option.

The main corridor trails in the Grand Canyon would be great. Go down the South Kaibab Trail and up the Bright Angel Trail (or vice versa) stopping in at the Phantom Ranch at the bottom of the Canyon (stay in the Bright Angel Campground there) on the way. Make reservations for the ranch's excellent meals. The stew is great and the beer ain't bad either. Would be a fantastic six day trip. www.nps.gov/grca/planyourvisit/upload/corridor_map.pdf

Grand Cyn as Jer suggested or lower elevations of AZ or SoCal badlands (bring water). There's also Phoenix area hiking ("Superstitions"). New Mexico and the 4 corners can get pretty chilly as it is "high, cold desert". Grand Cyn is low enough though the rims may be icy and the North rim closed - ditto Phoenix ... it's pretty low.

With the possible exception of the G Canyon and southern AZ your weather will be cold (Think winter).
