If our incompetent congress shuts down our government, would highway 441 thru the Smokies be closed as well? I have an upcoming trip to that area and was wondering what the status of that road would be.

What happens if I decide to take a walkabout on a trail that starts on 441? Will my vehicle be ticketed or towed? Thanks family Sherpa for your reply.

Thanks family Sherpa for your reply. the last time the park closed, there were signs posted that all parking areas & trailheads were closed. i'd imagine ticketing or towing wouldn't be out of the question.

So, if the Park is closed, and the employee's sent home, who's going to do the ticketing?
They should lock the restrooms and public buildings, but leave the park open.

i would imagine that at least some LEOs would be "essential" and stay on duty.

Also gatlinburg pd and sevier county sheriff helped with hwy 441 up to the state line, iirc, although I believe this may be pretty standard, because if you have an accident on 441, the county sheriff is dispatched to assist whoever the first responder is.

i would imagine that at least some LEOs would be "essential" and stay on duty. So it would only be a partial shutdown..... I suspect January and Feb are probably the months the park is least used, so, if it has to shutdown, now's the time IMO.

No, even during a full government shutdown, there are still departments and positions that are considered "essential" and are kept running. The postal service, TSA, Air Traffic Control, and a certain number of law enforcement agents within otherwise closed departments are still working.

The GSMNP put out a press release that the park is "mostly" open, but is use at your own risk.
