I've always wanted to hike part of the boundary waters. And at some point do the AT, or hike out west in years to come. I have never hiked/ camped in bear country. Where can i get basic info to stay safe? What are some tips you've learned or recommend?

I guess everyone is different but in Black Bear country it doesn't even cross my mind. Now don't take my flippant attitude and get hurt so wait for others to respond. I just happen to be one of those odd folks who would actually like to see a bear while backpacking.
I want to do the Boundary Waters also by joing the KEK with the BRT. Almost 100miles. Some fall this is going to be a reality.

I just make sure I have bear spray accessible, though I've never used it. I've come across bears on hikes twice. The first time he was far enough away that I just stopped for a bit until he moved on. The second time I got two serious warning growls (we surprised each other) and was ready with bear spray, stood still, talked loudly and waited until he moved on. Bear attacks are really quite rare and fatal attacks even rarer in most places. Check local DNR and state parks websites in your desired locations and follow their suggestions, would be my best advice.

I take all the necessary and common sense precautions as far as bear bags and keeping my site clean but reality tells me I should be many times more afraid of a lightning strike than a bear attack...You do things in your daily life that are far more dangerous than hiking...Like driving a car...
We did have a young lady attacked in our hiking region a few years ago but it is a rare event...

Black bear are very nosy around food, if not outright aggressive. You should always cook, eat and clean in a separate area well away from your tent. If you cook food in an open container, then I would not wear those clothes to sleep or even keep them in the tent. Absolutely no food inside your tent. Hang your food well away from your tent area.
