Hi there, I hike with my 2 kids 6y/o and 10 y/o. They love the outdoors, and have lots of experience camping. However they have never backpacked before (but it's their goal to visit isle royal). I live on the boarder of IL and IA. And about 2 hrs away from WI. My question is...do you recommend any places that possibly has a decent size loop trail that we can practice backpacking over a weekend? Any hike in campsites at some descent parks? It doesn't have to be a loop trail, but looking for suggestions where they can get the feel of backpacking and work on extending our days in preparation to isle royal.

recommend any places that possibly has a decent size loop trail Lots of loop options in Porcupine Mountains State Park in Upper Michigan, but keep in mind snow can persist into April and bugs can be really bad until cooler fall weather. My favorite time to go is late September to early October.
