It looks like there were four hikers with heavy packs all together. Say roughly a 700-pound load or more concentrated within around 20-30 feet along the bridge. Must have exceeded the load limit.

Looking at that metal bridge with all the supports, I would have trusted it.

The article says, "An investigation found that the failure was due to a rare manufacturing defect in a link of the cable."

A quench crack as it were. If it was in the wire rope, that'd be incredibly rare given that wire rope wires are primarily cold drawn. The steel fittings, however, are typically quenched.

Great. I was already uncomfortable enough crossing suspension bridges high over nasty water. At least that was a slow-moving stream (with enough water to cushion the fall). I think about some of the bridges I've crossed...oy.

All the suspension bridges here have signs on them of "one person at a time". I'd say that is a good policy. If I am right, the bridge turned and dumped them?

The bridge was apparently rated for 10 persons, so it would have been expected to be well within its limit. Very lucky indeed that there were no injuries. (The lake covers an area of 54sq kms and the 3-4 day track they were on traverses about half its circumference)

Still, no one needs to cross that closely together

They seemed to be walking "in step." That could have set up a harmonic situation the military tries to avoid by having the soldiers march "out of step.":
