I cannot for the life of me find the mileage of the loop trail around Grandview Mesa. It's either 2.8 or 3.0 miles from Grandview Point to the ruined building on Horseshoe Mesa. But if I want to continue on the trail towards Cave of the Domes and go all the way to the intersection with the Tonto Trail, how far is that?
I'm pretty sure it's about 4.0 or 4.1 miles from that intersection to the trail intersection that heads back up to Miner's (Page) Spring. I think it's about 1.2-1.4 miles from that intersection back to the Grandview Trail (or maybe to the ruined building).
Also, how far from the ruined building to the Cave of the Domes spur/wash?
Can anyone shed light on this? Any maps with the mileage segments on them? Neither Trails Illustrated nor GCNP pdf trail descriptions seem to have this info.
Many thanks in advance. Steve

Check the trips on Trimble. There are several from BP that have the gps data.

Park grid that they sent me many years ago says it is 4.5 miles from Grandview TH to Cottonwood Creek. Thybony's "Hiking the Grand Canyon" says it is 4.8 miles from Grandview Trailhead to Tonto Junction, via East Horseshoe Mesa Trail. That would be past Page Spring. Tracing that trail over at Treksee, it appears to be almost 1 mile from the Grandview trail to the junction with Tonto, on the West side. Scaling off my old TI map, it also looks to be short of a mile to the junction, down in Cottonwood Creek. About 1/10 of a mile from buildings to Cottonwood spur. I would be best guessing it to be about 13 miles for that lollipop. This pic is from acme mapper Lots of social trails around those abandoned buildings, so picking up the spur is difficult. Hope this helps.

Yeah, I've only been as far as the building and there are a lot of social trails there. I'm mainly concerned with the climb from the Tonto Trail up to the Mesa on the North end. I'll be camping at Hance Creek and want to hike around the North end up the Mesa and then climb up it, hopefully camping on the Mesa. It appears to be over 1000' climb in a short distance that you estimate at 1 mile. That's probably a good enough estimate, thanks.

Here is a better overhead shot, showing the trail down to Cottonwood incorrectly listed as Tonto. As you can see, the Cottonwood trail heads off to the West prior to Grandview reaching the ruins. Much closer than I recalled, and it might be easier to find by looping out that direction about 100 feet before the ruins. Or, it looks like you could start at the west wall, and walk parallel to that west wall a short distance before running into the trail.

Wait. I have been treating this like you are headed to Cottonwood to do your circumnavigation of the Mesa. Are you intending on heading down the trail that is off the tip of the north end of the West arm? That trail is about 1.5 miles from the ruins to the Tonto, with about .9 miles of the trail being on top of the Mesa. That would make the climbing/ descending portion only .6 miles, and much of that is fairly level (on the way down) once you get thru the switchbacks.

Are you intending on heading down the trail that is off the tip of the north end of the West arm? Yes, that's exactly it, except I'd be starting at Hance Creek, doing a counter-clockwise mesa circumnavigation, and heading back to the ruins before camping on the mesa (if I can get permitted for it). Cottonwood is great -- I was there earlier this year -- but I am not planning to visit Cottonwood on the trip I'm inquiring about.

OK, so that climb is about 800 ft, and the trail was hard to pick up once I crossed the dry creek bed that ran towards the river out of the middle of the horseshoe. I could see the switchbacks going up the West arm before I picked up the trail. Need to follow the Tonto until you get thru that big Southerly loop that crosses the creekbed.
