Despite its reputation New Jersey has some cool places. Except for the northeast part of the state it is pretty flat though... Which leaves the coast, and that was a great place to be because of the fall migration...birds everywhere!
I made two trips to the Manasquan Reservoir, since that was a 10min drive from where we were staying: a 5.1mi walk with the family around the reservoir and then a solo visit for some additional bird photography.
I visited Barnegat Lighthouse on a frigid windswept morning, took one photo before I'd had enough. I typically use thicker gloves in temperatures that cold, but had stupidly and stubbornly persisted with my thinner gloves throughout (instead of switching back and forth between the heavier and lighter gloves). My hands were blocks of ice which persuaded me that the lighthouse wasn't worth it!
I visited Edwin B. Forsythe right after my Barnegat Lighthouse fiasco. This is a pretty spectacular spot and highly recommended! Marshes, ponds and streams, right beside the ocean; during the fall migration this place was teeming with birds. The shallower water was half frozen, but the birds didn't seem to mind. In one spot I saw a whole flock of ducks sleeping in the middle of a partially frozen stream! e.g. Note the ice rimming the banks of the stream in the 2nd Edwin B. Forsythe photo.
A word about the final photo: I think those are Red Knots. If so, they are on a 5000mi journey from the northern end of North America to the southern tip of South America. Amazing.

Woah New Jersey is such a beautiful place. These birds make it more amazing to watch.

You make Pittburgh look good, and now New Jersey. If you aren't careful, you are going to mess with my prejudices!
I love that second shot, as well as most of the birds.

This was my first time visiting the southeastern coastline of New Jersey. Hands down the best part of the state that I’ve seen so far. I loved Edwin B. Forsythe National Wildlife Refuge; such a scenic locale and full of birds.

My brother lives on a nice hilltop in a town just west of the George Washington Bridge. The walk from his home down to the Hackensack River is awseome, lots of Herons there too. The AT through New Jersey has GREAT forest. I always find it laughable how folks from relatively unproductive states diss a state like New Jersey that pays for their own lack of productivity.
Thank you Gali for great images, and thank you New Jersey for all your greatness.
