Yes, this forum format is a thousand times better than the middle one they came up with. This one is even better than the original forum.
It's called Backpacker's Forums and yet current outdoor, gear and backpacking threads make up about 10% of the posts which is weird. The rest is filled up with left-field topics having nothing to do with camping or the outdoors or backpacking; stuff like baseball and the Yankees, Oklahoma monuments, flu shots, mass shootings, political correctness, and an insensible "two-word" thread.
I keep coming back for that rare 10 day Trip Report or an in-depth review of a TarpTent after 80 nights out. Wish me luck.
I guess I gotta quit clicking on Recently Updated Posts.

Glad to see you here. I remember you. I came back shortly after Steve, Wonder Man, got this forum up and running. I rarely posted anywhere but the gear forum as that is my main interest. I don't post often as we are still doing trail work until the snow flies but boy!, am I slowing down!

New forums are pretty new, everyone's accounts were reset. So says BlueBear.
And it's sad really, as we had some great discussions and some fabulous pictures. I am assuming all those threads and post are now lost? Or is there an archive here I am missing??

No archive *here*, no. Most of the really-old data was ported over to the relic disaster that's now orphaned on Backpacker's main site, but not ported again to here.
But the thing about all those old posts is... the majority of them are relatively unusable. All the old formatting is defunct, picture links are broken, most old trip reports of any length became largely unreadable. Having seen at least 5 different software switches on these forums since I signed up in '02, I've never seen "old" material really used all that often. I had some old trip reports I really loved, but looking back at them I wouldn't want to read them in the state they're in now.
The saying goes... "If you want it done right, better do it yourself." If you want old content preserved forever, it's best to host it under your own domain where you have direct control of any future changes. Otherwise it's all ephemeral. (And in the broader context, it all is anyway.) Things change, c'est la vie.

I like your Smugmug page but even that will probably all get deleted as you say. And once again it's not your own domain. Or is it?

I like your Smugmug page but even that will probably all get deleted as you say. And once again it's not your own domain. Or is it? I used to host all my photos on Webshots. But then, quite suddenly, Webshots went belly-up and *poof* it was gone. All my old trip reports were remote-linked to Webshots photos and *poof* all the picture links in those old reports are permanently broken. So much for the "permanence" of paid accounts on a website. I currently like Smugmug as well, but am under no illusions that that's a permanent thing. Live & learn, as they say.

Whenever I stumble across something on the webweb I want to keep for future reference, like trip reports on potential destinations, I print them to PDF. Then they live on forever on my XHD.
I can also upload them to my phone(s) for reference while on said adventure.
