Yes, it's old advice. I remember it from 40 years ago. I'd much rather use bearspray.

Yep. Same goes for optimistic canine predators as well. I don't think it would be my first line of defense, but wouldn't turn my nose up at the maneuver if the situation became so dire.
Satisfied to see the man acknowledging that the bear did nothing wrong. Too often today blame is assigned to a scared animal.

I recall hearing a similar story involving an African lion several years ago.

I remember reading that as a means of dealing with attacking dogs, long ago. I think about it when I'm biking and dogs get aggressive, though I'd rather us my tire pump than my arm. I'd worry the bear might bite off the arm, but heck, in his circs, I think you could figure that anything's worth a try!

Sure, I'd rather use bear spray, too, but there isn't always time to use it. Actually, I'd rather not have an up close and personal experience with a bear. I'm glad the guy got out of the encounter alive, and isn't blaming the bear. “I want everyone to know that it wasn’t the bear’s fault. He was as scared as I was,” Dellwo said.

When I was a kid one of my Mom's cousins ran a kennel. I played with the puppies all the time, I remember him telling me that when the pups bite too hard grab their lower jaw and slide your thumb under their tongue. They do not like it and it will teach them not to bite so hard, it works.
