I planned on this hike. Early in the hike I believe that I missed the right turn onto Beulah Trail. After coming out on FR44 I took a left. At about 0.49 miles (12 minutes at my flat/downhill pace) I found two possibilities to the right. The first was a virtual uturn/switchback - not exactly what I expected with the direction simply stating "Turn right and climb...". The second possibility, more of a typical right turn, appeared to be a wash which would be unnavigable in the spring. I found no markers at either location. I hiked up and down a while and found a second uturn to the right, which I eventually took, hoping that if it was the wrong turn it would intersect the wash or the other uturn, and I did find what appeared to be the first uturn come up to meet me after a while. Nevertheless, after climbing up to the next road, FA385, and turning left, I could not find the gas well. I found many flags staked in the ground and hanging from tree branches, indicating an underground gas line, but no well. So my assumption is that in taking the second uturn I was on the wrong trail. Is anyone familiar with this trail, and can describe the right turn off of FR44? Thanks.

I don't have a section, but the intersection should be at 38.755N 79.745W, where the west end of the Beulah Trail 310 ends at FR44.
Looking at other maps such as mapwv.gov/trails I can see where I headed SSW on the West Fork Trail/TR312, took a left on High Falls Trail/TR345 for about 0.5 mile through a little wooded vale, and came out on FR44 (possibly also called Glady Durbin) and headed NNE for about 0.5 mile. I see only one of the two switchbacks.
Thanks.

If FR44 is 1.5 miles to the east then that's a different way than I came in. I came in about 1.0 miles further east. I don't remember any cemeteries, and I definitely didn't climb a mountain before I got to FR44. There are lots of trails in the area, which can be pieced together in many ways, so I guess this shouldn't be a surprise.
From Alpena I drove in south on Glady Rd/27, about 10 miles, to reach my starting point. This put me on the eastern leg of the West Fork trail/312.
Anyway, it was hunting season and bears kept me up all night (I'm a very light sleeper), so I bailed after the first night.

There is an update to the guide, I'll dig it up if you want, maybe there was a change?

I think that's a somewhat different trail. It could be the west leg of the West Fork Trail, whereas I started out on the east leg. From what I've seen on other maps the wash might have been Beulah Trail, which I wanted to take for the next little leg of the hike. It was supposed to be well marked and posted, but I couldn't find anything.
Oh well.

I just looked for a mention of FR 44, maybe it gets crossed more than once?

I don't think so. The route I intended to take was basically a long rectangle oriented NNE. FR44 was a small section (0.49mi) on the short southern leg.
The bottom line is that given that from my house it's a 4.5 hour drive to the trail, so it was kinda stupid for me to go there. I can find places at 3 hours or so, which is especially important during the short winter hours.
