I saw an eclipse sequence image above Arch Rock in Joshua Tree NP that was awesome. Then I saw an eclipse photo taken as Old Faithful was erupting - amazing! Then I saw this image, the sequence paired with a lightning storm. apod.nasa.gov/apod/ap150929.html

Pulling up a few more of the background stars and trying to tame down the moon on a longer exposure. Full frame but resized for web. 8" f4 telescope(800mm fl), Nikon d7100, ISO 100, 9 sec. I assume you have a tracking system on your setup, or else how are you avoiding movement on that 9 second exposure. Shoot, I was getting movement on 15 second exposures with my 200mm lens.

Of course ! This is my setup, without my camera. 9 secs is an ultra fast exposure to me. Normally, I'm used to 5-10 MINUTES for a single exposure, and then stacking 30-60 of them, equaling hours of time, for my usual targets.

For single shots you can apply the so-called "500 rule": 500/focal length/factor = max exposure in seconds. "factor" is a bit of a nebulous term (no pun intended), wherein 35mm film = 1. Smaller film/sensor sizes and/or longer focal lengths imply faster shutter speeds, hence the need for a tracking mechanism for longer focal lengths. It's one thing to take a shot of the Milky Way. It's another to take an image of a galaxy.

Time to fix dinner. I read the title of this thread as "edible pictures." Not even close! Then you go throwing in Milky Ways...

Now you're really making my el'cheapo telephoto look like crap. I can't hardly get a decent shot of the Milky Way.
