What I like about pictures is that they block out the rest of the world so we can see things that are right in front of us. You do it well. I'm kind of scatter brained, I try to take in everything at once I think. Thank you I really enjoy them

Thanks, dale . You touched on a composition technique I worked on for quite some time; I always want to be able to keep it 'simple', relegating, while still keeping, extra details to the background. Sometimes I'm successful, and sometimes not. (In the early days I had a actual mental checklist I used to go through before even lifting the camera; i.e. 'seeing' the shot prior to framing it in the camera. It's become more automatic now, which is possibly an indication that I'm falling into a rut...)

I knew it wasn't just point and shoot as I do with my phone lol. Those pictures are like a magic trick, you wonder how they do it but if you knew it wouldn't be magic

Exactly! You’ve come up with two extremely insightful posts. Of course, there’s method there, which I kind of only obliquely referred to in my previous post*. Here’s why: Now, when I look at a beautiful photograph, or beautiful cinematography, I know almost all the compositional techniques that are being used, which definitely lessens their emotional impact. It’s a double edged sword; on the one hand I want to know how it was done, but on the other hand the knowing comes with a cost in enjoyment. * Feel free to ask specific questions, and I’ll be only too happy to oblige. However, remember that it’s a double edged sword!

Your "rut" is a lot higher level rut than I could ever hope to occupy for photography, knowing techniques didn't help for me to get to a level where I felt like sharing, so I gave up decades ago.
Possibly, new venues could help break any rut you might feel.
I can't recall if I've seen any of your work from the Moraine/McConnells Mill area not far north of Pittsburgh. Down in the Slippery Rock Creek gorge is quite a contrast from the surrounding strip mine/fracking countryside. Jennings would be a great place in August when the relict prairie blooms. Moraine State Park, in between, is more subtle but interestingly varied. Davis Hollow Cabin adds an interesting cultural element.

I go to Slippery Rock quite a bit. Going from Hell's Hollow to Alpha Falls and back (~16mi), via Slippery Rock Gorge, is a hike I've done a few times That is a great hike. Although, I've always turned around at McConnells Mill. It is great hike but for some reason I don't have many pics from those hikes. Maybe that'll change before the snow flies or next spring.
