One other interesting aspect of the story is that the photo of West Virginia which was used in the article was taken by me. cool! stunning photo! is it going in the print edition, too?

Doubt it. The article is more than a year old, and if it didn't make it then, it won't now.

talus, that's a view of North Fork Mountain, taken from Chimney Top, a few miles southeast of Dolly Sods. It's my favorite view in the entire mid-Atlantic. I'm going to go see it again in two weeks.

Connecticut, Massachusetts, DC, and Alabama are the surprises to me.
I don't remember a single hill in DC. But it's been many moons since I was last there. Either my memory could be wrong, or the geography has changed. It's the piles of cash given to congressmen from lobbyists. It's green you know, the analysts here must've mistaken them for real mountains.

The stuff we've been biking up and down lately makes one think there's nothing flat in CA. But I know that's not true. That huge Central Valley is flat, unless you're biking. Then there's a headwind, which is the same thing as a hill, only less scenic.

South Louisiana is super-flat. I'm 22' above sea level and roughly 90 miles from the Gulf of Mexico. Central and North Louisiana have some nice rolling hills, but not much in comparison to, you know, actual hills.

Ok…. We won as the flattest state. But we do have hills that get up to a whopping 300+ feet. Now being flat is not all that bad. The rivers do not have teeth mashing rapids to navigate through. We have hundreds of miles of sand beaches with great views of sunsets over the Gulf of Mexico and sun rises over the Atlantic. Lakes are everywhere for paddling and fishing. Then there is the everglades for some great paddling and camping.

And the state tree of Kansas is the telephone pole. (I can say that, I grew up there.)

Isn't the mosquito the State bird for Florida? I have been proposing that the state bird be changed to the Black Vulture as it represents our population better than the Mocking Bird. As far as mosquitoes go what the big deal with these little bugs. Yes, they might be called common and even numerous and they do like your blood and may give you West Nile virus, Saint Lewis Encephalitis, Eastern Equine Encephalitis, Dengue Fever or even malaria but that is all part of the charm of Florida.

I knew it made the move to the US, but haven't heard of any outbreaks. But Malaria, has it made it's way that far north ?

Proof of the weird Iowa-New Jersey nexus, the similar flatness level.
