Yeah, I agree. The unsupported thru-hike is far more admirable in my estimation. Nonetheless, speed records are not my thing. To each his or her own.

If Grandma Gatewood had started hiking earlier, I'll be she'd have put them all to shame.

Congrats - now she needs a sandwich (or 3 with fries and a double Peanut Butter fudge milkshake)

I'm not a fan of the fast hike, either. But I like her attitude. Sounds like she does it for love of pushing herself to the limit (for me, that would mean doing the entire PCT in 2 years, probably!). And that, I can respect, especially since she did it unsupported and without a big fanfare.

I didn't know Amish people did stuff like that. Cool.

What she did is make it possible to dispense with the mens/women's record and just have THE record. I know she wanted to keep her hike low key but it really deserves much more attention.

"What she did is make it possible to dispense with the mens/women's record and just have THE record."
. . . sort of.
The funny thing about FKTs is that the designation switches depending on the gender of who owns the record. So, for example, when Matt Kirk held the self-supported record they also made note that the women's record was held by Snorkle (Liz Thomas). Now that a woman holds the speed record, Matt will be noted as holding the men's record.
