Being a canoe and kayak kind of guy, I've done a fair amount of backpacking as well. Including, Mt. McKinley National Park, Yosemite, Isle Royale, Aspen, Cinque Terre area, along with numerous day hikes. My latest hike this fall was on the Superior Hiking Trail in MN. Fantastic trail along Lake Superior and the beautiful rivers cascading down the ridges. A short hike to try out this trail, with plans to do more of it. Side note - who in the world decides on these trail names...I mean SHT? I don't think the vehicle license people would even allow this - SH_T?? Like the BWCAW in MN, I'll always call it the Boundary Waters, I'll refer to this as the NCT - Lake Superior section, or something like that. NCT (North Country Trail) was starting to get formed back in the 70's when I worked for the Chippewa National Forest and worked on that section. I get why locals want to prioritize their section "name" of the NCT, but the sooner trailheads start working together, the better it will be for the overall establishment of this trail.
By the way, some of us "trailhead" type folks need to reign it in. Thanks to some aggressive friends(?) of this trail use, they made a huge blunder and shut down a section of the Lake Superior trail by upsetting a landowner, who "use to" allow passage through their land. If you plan to hike this trail, take note - Gooseberry Falls to Blueberry Road is CLOSED PERMANENTLY.
