“I looked up ahead and saw two cougars on the trail, and they saw me and then they moved into the bush,” Stone told CBC News. link

yikes - they are my #1 fear when I hike, which is why I very rarely go solo - glad the bear spray worked!

Note that the runner most likely precipitated the actions of the mountain lions by running in their territory. As noted in the article: [/span][/ul] The video shows very little at about 33 seconds. I guess we'll have to take the runner's word that: Whether the animals' actions really constitute an "attack" by one or two cats isn't really clear, but it's good to see that the runner placed the priority on having the bearspray ready rather than on just getting a video of the problem he, in effect, created by his own actions. But the runner is lucky. And I hope he knows that. The situation could have ended much differently if he had not seen the big cats well before they approached him. And most runners will probably not be so lucky to have such warning. So even though the bearspray seems to have worked, it would not be good for runners to take the situation lightly. Running in such locations is the problem. The problem is not the mountain lions. All in all, the outcome was much better than if he had gotten injured or killed and the cougars had gotten a bad reputation for a situation the man brought upon himself.

I am going to agree with Travis on this one: one of the first things you need to remember if and when you meet a predator in the wild is DO NOT RUN. Running tends to trigger a predator's instinct and makes them more prone to chase you since you are acting like prey.

Maybe I am not seeing the video correctly, but if I saw two cougars on the trail, I certainly would not head towards the area where they went into the bushes.

He seemed a little quick on the trigger to me. Just because you see a cat doesn't mean you're in danger. Cats are curious. ...and he was walking at the time he sprayed. Not buying the "dead run" either. That cat can run 40+ mph and it seemed to come to an awful quick retreat to be running flat out.
