My husband and I volunteer on Old Rag in Shenandoah National Park. For those not familiar with the mountain, it can be a real zoo, particularly in the fall. This past Saturday, with great weather and the beginnings of leaf change, was no different. The enormous parking lot was already full when we arrived (there is separate parking for volunteers) and the neighbor was charging $10/car to park in her pasture. The crowd was in pretty good spirits, though, so the day was mostly uneventful. Near the end of the day on the summit, we wound up helping a guy with an abrasion (not serious). Once he was on his way, we realized it was quiet: the crowd was gone, the light was beautiful, and the ravens were playing on the wind. Old Rag can be madness, but it can be magical and this was one of those times. This is what the summit looked like most of the afternoon and this is only one small section of it. After the crowds went home. Looking south towards Fork Mountain. These rocks were covered with people earlier in the afternoon. Ravens taking a break on the rocks. A raven that found a snack left by a hiker. Fall colors on the Saddle Trail on our way down.

Lovely photos! My favorites are the 2nd and 3rd ones.
The crowds...eek! I was planning to be there in two weeks time; maybe I need to find another hike...

GaliWalker, Weekends in October are pretty insane up there. If you get started super early, it can be tolerable. If the weather forecast for DC is marginal, but it is going to be ok further west, you can luck out and get a quieter day. Otherwise, it will be like being on the National Mall during Cherry Blossoms. If you do decide to head up there, let me know, we are usually on the mountain working a few times during fall season and we may be up that day. If you want a challenging alternative in the same area, I really like the Robertson Mountain-Corbin Hollow loop. If you want something longer, you could add Stony Man or Nicholson Hollow to that (I can give you a specific route if you want). The summit of Robertson has a nice view down Weakley Hollow and looking back at Old Rag. No rock scramble though, but hardly any people. You park in the same place as for Old Rag.

It's beautiful...once the people have gone The good news for GaliWalker is that I'll bet almost all the people are up there mid-day--not at the times when the light is best and the photos good.

Nice photos - I hiked that with my mom in September several years ago and I don't remember crowds, although it may have been a weekday.
Is it just me or is everywhere crowded now? I feel like a crab, but I think we are loving our wilderness to death!

Campfires&Concierges, you got lucky or were definitely there on a weekday. This particular trail has some serious management challenges that I won't get into here. I go back and forth. On one hand, I really want them to limit the numbers allowed to hike Old Rag in a day. On the other hand, 95% of people seem to think that it and White Oak Canyon are the only trails in Shenandoah, so you can find some great solitude elsewhere in the park because everyone is on those two trails. There are no easy answers and Old Rag is definitely being loved to death.

I went up Old Rag yesterday. I got a late start, only pulling into the parking lot by 11:00am. The parking lot - space for 200+ cars - was almost full; by the time I'd parked there was only one open space left! More about my day in an upcoming trip report...

On the bright side, at least you didn't have to pay the neighbor to park in her pasture.
