Excerpts: But KFC’s expansion here comes as obesity and related health problems have been surging. Public health officials see fried chicken, french fries and pizza as spurring and intensifying a global obesity epidemic that has hit hard in Ghana — one of 73 countries where obesity has at least doubled since 1980. In that period, Ghana’s obesity rates have surged more than 650 percent, from less than 2 percent of the population to 13.6 percent, according to the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation, an independent research center at the University of Washington.
“People march their sons and daughters to buy KFC and buy pizza and they like to show them what we can afford,” said Matilda Laar, who lectures about family and consumer sciences at the University of Ghana. KFC isn’t just food, she said. “It’s social status.”Much, much more here: www.nytimes.com/2017/10/02/health/ghana-kfc-obesity.html?mc=aud_dev&mcid=keywee&mccr=domdesk&kwp_0=544095&kwp_4=1951898&kwp_1=818352

obesity and related health problems... I almost missed this, WWBF. I seldom look in on this section because the diabetes tgread sits dormant and that's my main health concern. But since November happens to be Diabetes Awareness Month, and I am already quite aware, I thought I'd add some info to that quiet thraed. Then I saw your topic of obesity. I'm sure a forum populated by backpackers is not a place to expect a lot of people who see themselves as obese. But I'd bet that many would admit to being a little overweight. And maybe some fast food shows up on the menu once a week, maybe some Doritos? Quick, how many chips in a serving? No. not a whole bag. Anyone ever actually check the calories (carbs) in that burger? Ghana is suffering a surge in obesity because it shows the ability to afford the "luxury" of American fast foods? Stand back, the next demonstration of wealth will be the ability to pay for the drugs to treat diabetes!
