My plans for a hike in West Virginia got cancelled due to a fire, so I decided to go and visit the waterfalls of Ricketts Glen State Park one more time. The east coast has had almost no rain the past couple of months, so I was worried about the strength of flow of the 22 waterfalls on the twin forks of Kitchen Creek. As I feared, one fork had very little water, but thankfully the other had enough to make the 9hr drive (round-trip) worth it. The place was fast becoming a zoo as the day wore on. While trying to get one photo, near the end, I had to wait for approximately 200 people to get out of the way! I packed up soon after that and drove 5mi away to try and photography some of the waterfalls on Heberly Run. Unfortunately, the sun was shining brightly by now, leading to irksome highlights on the waterfalls, which meant my day was effectively done. I took a couple of documentary photos of Lewis Falls, just to prove I was there and that I made it down to the splash pool, before heading back to Pittsburgh. - Hiking/photography stats: 9mi, ~1300ft gain, 9hr- Total trip time (house-house): 18.5hrs

I like waterfalls, I like rough trails, I'm not so ok with crowds, and the combination of the three really pushes that venue far off my favorites list. Compared to the Finger Lakes region state parks where the trails add to rather than detract from the natural attractions, I'm not placing Ricketts Glen high on the list of places I'll go again soon. So I'll enjoy your photos from the screen, and scramble around someplace else! Thanks.

I’m OK with crowds, within reason, but party sizes bigger than 20 should be restricted. (National Parks typically have limits of 12-15.) Groups of 100+ is simply ridiculous. I love Ricketts Glen, and visit every year, but really wanted to give it a break this year. I only went because my primary destination had become unavailable.

Too bad you couldn't go today, the waterfalls in the Loyalsock State Forest were gushing, and there were few cars in the Ricketts Glen parking areas when I drove by.

Yeah, unfortunately, I’m pretty much a weekend warrior.

GaliWalker - though the timing on autumn is different, have you considered the knife edges on Tussey Mountain on Mid State Trail south from Everett as a venue to check out, comparable in many ways to North Fork Mountain? The road noise from the PA Turnpike won't come through in the photos...

Hmmm, no, I've never been in that area (I think). Thanks for the tip! Although this and the coming weekends' hikes are set, I may look into going there after...
