Spent a month in Portland last month and didn't have a car with me, so learned how to get to/from Mt Hood/PCT via public transit for $5.50. Works pretty slick. You don't have to go all the way to Timberline, I did several hikes along the Salmon River by getting off at Zigzag. Would work well for someone flying in/out of PDX as the MAX runs right to the airport. Here's the instructions:

GREAT!! Info and a civil service. Thanks kwpapke. Now if there was anything at all similar to this for Rainier. But the Oregon has always been a step ahead for services.

This is great, how long is the one way trip? Lot cheaper than gas, plus you don't have to drive.
(BTW the max sometimes shows the wrong stop for the coming stop which it did the last time I was on it, so check at an earlier stop to see if it is in sync etc.)

I searched for Portland to Sandy and came up with this article from the Oregonian with links to the 3 transit services -about a year old so check its info against the schedule www.oregonlive.com/travel/index.ssf/2014/07/how_to_take_public_transportat.html"A day trip takes three hours from downtown Portland to Timberline Lodge plus three hours return. So the time available for hiking, exploring or skiing is limited. An alternative is to spend a night or two at Timberline Lodge or somewhere on the way, such as in Welches or Government Camp, so you don't have to figure out how to get up, do some hiking or exploring, and get back in one day." About an Hour from Portland to Gresham, and from Sandy to Timberline: 1/2 hour from Gresham to Sanday , so I guess 30 minutes for connections, etc. www.mthoodexpress.com/#!schedule-map/c1h6a www.ci.sandy.or.us/Schedules-SAM/

Here is an option from Downtown PDX that takes about the same time as to drive from there, but is $50! Ski season only? First option here , along with some others that I did not check out.
