This is a mostly fast-paced account of how a wealthy amateur made the first use of Lidar to search for ruins in the Americas, focusing on an essentially unpopulated area of Honduras. It includes tales of life in the undisturbed rain forest, rampant corruption, ugly academic jealousy, and a digression into the topic of disease-based depopulation a la 1491 or Guns, Germs, and Steel. Some of it was featured in National Geographic not long ago.
This book is a no-kidding page-turner until a bit near the end, which deals with Leishmaniasis endemic in Honduras, which has spread as far north as Oklahoma. This is definitely worth a read.
