ive been upgrading all my gear and im considering pulling the trigger on one of these. the only thing preventing me is waiting for them to replenish stock for winter and one question: why are these (and similar) marketed as alpine jackets? is high fill down not recommended for the more humid environments? obviously i wouldnt hike with it on, only for sitting around in and in the bag for really cold weather. id bring this along for temps between single digits up to about 40. most of my backpacking is southern applachians.

Well, this particular jacket only has 1.6 ounces of actual down fill. I'd imagine you'd just freeze your butt off without some heavy supplementation. It's less to do with the fill power, and more to do with the amount of it. If an emergency arises, this wouldn't get you through the night for sure. That being said, I have the Montbell Alpine light and it's a freaking furnace. I love it. I've never once felt anything resembling a cold breeze through it. I'd check that out. dirthurts - the plasma 1000 jacket only has 1.6oz fill. The parka is what I'm interested in. It has a hood and is much puffier, with 3.4oz of 1000fp down. nice review on the alpine light. so my main question is, why do they use the term "alpine" in their marketing. is it just for people to imagine a lovely alpine trip or is the jacket intended for the drier alpine weather? I imagine it is the former, just want to make sure before I spend the coin. thanks!

Yes, it's just a name. The only real differences in down these days is the water resistant down which is put into a chemical bath of sorts that makes it water resistant. Even then, I've used standard down jackets for years in moist cold climates without issue.

Ah, sorry. Missed the parka keyword there! I love the parka.

Sort of like using the word "plasma" in the title, huh?

I’ve tried getting a Montbell 1000 Plasma Parka for the last two year without any luck because they’re always sold out of the XXL model in black. This fall I’m going to be sure to purchase one early. Can’t wait to get one…!
