Posted this on the old board and got a good response. Thought I'd see what happens here. Anyway, wife and I are going to be in Summit Co, CO next week for several days to day hike. We are a couple of in their 60s ornery obsessive hiking Missouri flatlanders. Been pouring through a couple of hiking books and are just about overwhelmed at the possibilities. Any suggestions. We don't want to be too intense, but anticipate a good earlier in the day hike (up to 6 or so miles round trip - suspect hiking at maybe a mile and a half an hour given excessive picture taking) and, if time permits, messing around at the Dillon Res in the evening or some such thing. Wife is really anticipating adding to her flower life list (594 so far) so that is important (this is where the excessive picture taking enters). Any suggestions? We've been to RMNP and hiked there so we know acclimation, sun, and those types of things. Thanks

Most of what I've done in that area has been backpacking, but I did a really nice "warm up" day hike near Vail Pass on one of my BP trips there, and it had excellent views of the Gores. I can look up more details when I get home tonight.
If you like beer (and what kind of freak doesn't), be sure to visit the Dillon Dam Brewery.

The hike I was thinking about is called the Bowman's Shortcut trail. It's an out and back, 5.6 miles total. It's in the book Hiking Colorado's Summit County Area, by Maryann Gaug.

Thanks both of you. Just got back and all was great. Wife is really into wild flowers (keeps a life list - currently at 700+/-) and the locals said this was a super flower year due to wet weather and the flowers, as some guy said, "we're most excellent". She's still working on IDing several pouring through the roughly 2000 (no exaggeration) photos she took. Praise the digital inventor. She has added many to her list. Did several hikes starting at 7 AM and then chilled for a bit and did some short hikes in the Dillon area in the evening. Really enjoyed walking a large part of the Gore Trail. One meadow with Bald Mtn staring down was stunning. That trail was a real let's see "round-the-bend" producer. I get that bad some times. I also enjoyed some of the CO trail. Met and talked to a few CO T through hikers. Good stuff. Thanks for the tips.

Glad to hear you had a great time. The Gore Range is one of my favorite areas as well.
