Crap. the NPS has closed the campsite off the Snow Creek trail due to a bear that has figured out she can roll a canister off a four hundred foot cliff and have gravity plus rocks smash it open for her. She's been doing this for over two years and the park got nervous. She's GPS'd so they are now tracking her. The concern I expect is she sees the camps as a source for food regardless of the presence of a canister, which instead is an attractant for her and that that's risking too many close bear-visitor encounters. This is a special circumstance, cliff proximity etc. but I sure hope they don't go down the Great Smoky Mountain path of scattering camping closures all over the park. "...Current Closures Current trail closures are listed on the current conditions page. Due to increasing bear activity along the Snow Creek trail and the potential for bear/human interactions the area to the south and east of the footbridge [3.3 MB pdf] will be closed to overnight camping. The National Park Service will continue to monitor the bears' activity and will re-open the area to camping as soon as possible. The trails and areas are open to day hiking...." www.nps.gov/yose/planyourvisit/wildcond.htm

Didn't see that, but I got chased out of camp by a bear at Sunrise Creek last month. Thought it was ridiculous to have a bear marauding through their busiest backcountry area every day for a month. I don't think Yosemite manages their backcountry very well at all - seems to be competing factions within the park that have different agendas. They neither protect over-used areas nor accomodate the increasing demand. They seem unwilling to try new ideas and unable to deal with emerging issues in a timely manner.
I bet they are doing a lot of things differently in the next few years.

They tend to reply "it's Wilderness deal with it" and I can't entirely disagree.

..."It's Wilderness; deal with it" I agree that dealing with it a better philosophy than arbitrarily, totally closing an entire area to camping just because some hikers are not capable of dealing. Being a bit of a rebel myself, my last month's backpacking trip went there - actually looking to see this particular bear even though warned about the cliff-roll thing. I did not fear - no danger really - just another bear...seen too many already.
Camping there at night (not right at the overlook but slightly back in the trees - really close (still basically illegal), I tied my Bearikade to a tree, put my pan atop the can for noise, and collected a small pile of granite ammo...just in case. Did not encounter the bear. No problems.
