Hi everyone, how's things? For our illustrious SEC folks, can someone tell me how the hiking is near Huntsville, AL in the winter? I might have a chance to be down there for a week or so in January or February and I'm trying to make some plans to get outdoors. Dayhiking only, no chance that I'll be doing overnights outdoors.

How close to Huntsville do you want to stay? The weather is usually great for hiking then. I'm not familiar with things in immediate vicinity of Huntsville, but there are some nice places within shortish drives.
Welcome back, by the way!

Thanks foxalo, how far would I have to drive to get to somewhere worth hiking?

Close to Huntsville, you have Monte Sano State Park. There are a few trails there. I haven't explored them, but the park is pretty. About an hour away, you have the Walls of Jericho. Bankhead National Forest is also about an hour. Do you have the All Trails app? I like to use that when I want to explore new places, both close to home and when traveling.

Several good trails inside the city limits. State Park, Land Trust. Some flat, some steep. Message me and I'll hook you up with a guide.

Fox,
I didn't have the app, but do now. Thanks for the suggestion for it and the trails. HT, I'll let you know as soon as I know my itinerary.

In the meantime, you can look at trail maps here (Land Trust) and here (Monte Sano SP). Guntersville State Park is about 35 minutes from Huntsville ( trail map here) and you'll be here when they have Eagle Weekends as lots of the birds nest around the park.

I backpacked in Monte Sano Saturday Night. I don't actually think you're supposed to do that. They have no camping spots, We just slept in Eno's I wish they would trim back some of the trees at the overlooks. It could have been glorious.

They have no camping spots Correct, no backcountry sites. I'm a little surprised they left your car alone overnight.
