Although there is some chance that this is a relative low in a "new normal", we won't know for decades, perhaps longer. Everything else we see happening in weather around the world would indicate that this may not be a 500 year cycle anymore. Put this in the list of things I'd like to stay around long enough to find out (but probably won't). OTOH, I was poking around looking for data on snowfall/snowpack and found this: I see low numbers every so often - though, by definition, not nearly as low as those this year - in 1881, 1885, 1924 and 1977. Seems like there's a general tendency in that graph to "even out" (less year-to-year variation) more than in the 19th century numbers. Of course, I'm no scientist. Wait and see.
