Dropping stuff from a great height works to get at goodies inside hard shells: be they clamshells (gulls) or food storage canisters. www.outsideonline.com/2013656/yosemite-bears-keep-getting-smarterThat Snow Creek camping spot IS spectacular btw, pity if they banned camping there. You get a view straight across at the face of Half Dome.

It might be fun to test the height it takes to break open the various canisters.

The good news. Since bears can't fly (yet) they need a convenient cliff like this one. I bet that bear was just messing with a canister as they sometime will and one time it rolled off the cliff and smashed and the bear went after it, found it popped open and went: "Whoa!"

Can't be that hard to strengthen bear canisters. The only downside (to us) might be the added weight. Wouldn't take a lot to make them unusable. They are already a pretty huge burden.

The bad news is that she has repeated it, many times. So camping near cliffs might be a bad idea. Of course, for some of us, it's a bad idea anyway

Well, boo. What'd I they think this Grest Smoky Mountain? "Due to increasing bear activity along the Snow Creek trail and the potential for bear/human interactions the area to the south and east of the footbridge [3.3 MB pdf] will be closed to overnight camping. The National Park Service will continue to monitor the bears' activity and will re-open the area to camping as soon as possible. The trails and areas are open to day hiking." www.nps.gov/yose/planyourvisit/wildcond.htm
