Not really backpacking related though there may be some hiking involved, I have a family vacation trip coming up to June Lake. My wife is not a big a camper, so we'll be staying in a cabin in the June Lake area for 5 nights. She does enjoy paddling and I'll be hauling up my Old Town Discovery canoe and possibly a kayak as well. I'm looking for various recommendations for the area such as easy dayhiking and paddling opportunities and other activities (like horseback riding); I do have some things in mind, such as visiting Bodie and paddling Mono Lake and one of the lakes in June Lakes loop, perhaps Gull Lake. What I most need is insight into more obscure things like best places to buy groceries and sundries and do laundry, and good eating establishments.

est places to buy groceries and sundries Not a lot around there. The little market in Lee Vining has basics, anyway. Laundry, I've never looked for out there, but maybe the resort has it? good eating establishments. Define "good." We enjoyed burgers etc. at the Mono Cone in Lee Vining. I've eaten at the cafe on the south end of town, too--I think it's Nicely's. That wasn't remarkable, but was decent. Have never sampled the coffee joints, but they look pretty nice. Consider a pre-sunrise visit to the south tufa towers if you are interested in photography.

There's a small general store in the village, but you're better off with the 25 miles to Mammoth for anything more than a bag full. The Carson Peak Inn is good, it's been there for 60 years. The Tiger Bar, in the middle of town, has good food and you get to meet the locals. Clint Eastwood liked to hang there when filming nearby. I like floating on Silver Lake as the view up at Carson Peak is beautiful. You can paddle a ways up the Rush Creek inlet for a different perspective. Lots of birds in the marshy areas. The falls from Agnew Lake should be a sight this year. There's a trail that goes to Agnew across from Silver Lake. There's some interesting geological areas like Obsidian Dome, just south on 395 to explore. A little farther brings you to Hot Creek, just south of the turn to Mammoth. Also a short drive to Tioga Pass and going up to Saddlebag Lake. As Rebecca said, Mono Lake . Easy hiking. I had the pleasure of living in a cabin in June for a year, I've gone back lots, even though it's a plane ride and a long drive to do so. The most beautiful easy day hike I know is up Little Lakes Valley above Rock Creek Lake/Tom's Place. About an hour with the drive up to 10,000 feet at the trailhead at Mosquito Flats. Not going back this year, maybe next. I'm jealous.

Mono Cone in Lee Vining does have a good selection of burgers. My favorite item that they sell is the buttermilk shake.
The Mono Market in Lee Vining has great burritos including breakfast ones, wraps and other good deli items, with some vegetarian offerings too.
I believe there is a laundry facility right next to Mono Market.
We just stayed in Lee Vining before going to Tuolumne...
Also, there was just a wildfire near Silver Lake but it should be out by now.
Yes, the falls and the marsh areas of Silver Lake are quite impressive this year. They are letting a lot of water out from the lakes (reservoirs) above.

The Mobil Mart at the south west corner of the 395/120 (Tioga Pass road) intersection has some pretty good and interesting food (seriously; climbers drive down from Tuolumne for it). Worth checking out, but the lines can be long at times; if there is a tour bus in the parking lot, don't bother.
Haven't done more in June Lake other than fish, so I can't really speak for anything there. The gas staion at the turn off from the 395 to June has bits and pieces to supply campers (hot dogs, buns, condiments and stuff like that), but if you are driving thru Bishop or past Mammoth (HWY 203) those are your best bets for groceries. June Lake gets a lot of fishermen and used to be a ski area, so I would expect they have some decent restaurants and maybe a decently stocked mini-mart for generic grocery items, but can't say for sure.

Better food ( a bit of a distance) is Tamarack Resort at Lake Mary (Mammonth) They have two seatings a night. It is more of a bon voyage dinner.
