Hey New Englanders, forgive the long post.
Will be making a trip up to Acadia soon and was looking for advice if anyone would care to lend it.
On the Acadia side...
Have a campsite reserved for Friday, Saturday, Sunday night. Won't be arriving til late Friday (or possibly Saturday morning, if work stuff gets in the way) so thinking hike Saturday, kayak Sunday, possibly a little more hiking Monday, unless I go to Katahdin (more on that below). So questions are:
On Monday, things get complicated, and trying to decide best course of action. Either Monday or Tuesday night at the latest I need to meet my family in central Vermont, so my options I see are:
If I do Katahdin...
Thank you!

- Hiking recommendations? Have plenty of experience hiking big mountains out west in California. Grew up in Massachusetts and do some NE hiking in summers, so some experience with the NE terrain.
Recommendations on places to rent kayaks from? Seems like there are a ton, and wondering if there are any favorites. I have some sea kayaking experience from here in SoCal (Channel Islands was last big kayak trip) but am by no means an expert. Is it an okay decision to go out on my own (which I'd much prefer) or are the conditions treacherous enough that I should go with a tour group).- Anything else I should just really make sure I see and do?
On Monday, things get complicated, and trying to decide best course of action. Either Monday or Tuesday night at the latest I need to meet my family in central Vermont, so my options I see are:
- Be a good son, and go to VT on Monday, after spending the morning in Acadia
- Spend one more night in Acadia, allowing myself another full day there
- Go to Katahdin area, hopefully hiking up the mountain. Camping there, and leaving Tuesday morning for KW&WNM or Baxter SP
If I do Katahdin...
- First and foremost, driving a low clearance sedan. Will I be able to safely make it to the trailhead to go up Katahdin?
- Can I drive to Katahdin from Acadia, climb and do Knife's Edge, and camp or backpack all in a day? How much time do I need for the hike?
- Any permits I should be aware of?
- Tips for camping spots? Backpacking advice? All stuff I should look up on my own, but will take any information people are will to share.
- Is it worth doing Katahin area as well, or should I just knock out Acadia in my limited window?
Thank you!
