www.archaeology.org/news - source I enjoy about current work in archaeology. Also, if you want to know what it is like to be an archaeologist a book I recently read seemed to fill that need. It's not your Indiana Jones. Lives in Ruins by Marilyn Johnson. There was one item early on the book about Old Croghan Man that really got my attention. A 2000 year old 6 1/2 guy (giant for his time) who must have been ceremoniously executed given his head was chopped off as were his nipples. It seems the ruling elite of northern Ireland made those below them suck their nipples to show obedience. Quirks like that I enjoy (and used to share with my students). Also, this was not your bone skeleton remains. The bogs (little oxygen) in the region dissolved the bones, but not the flesh. So much so, that even fingerprints and whiskers were available to archaeologists. For Old Croghan Man you can do a easy web search if you want more. I find this interesting. So, if any one here wants to share an interesting quirk let's have it. One more, back in the early/mid 1800's US away from the cities (aka the frontier) men grew their fingernails long. The better for eye gouging in bar fights. Shoot, another. In Colonial Philadelphia and other places hogs roamed freely. A cheap way for garbage removal and for chamber pot contents removal given the contents were simply cast out the window in the morning (one time the "stuff" landed on the head of a bride in wedding dress walking by (this material is from Am Hertage Mag - I didn't make this up).

Yeah, I keep that link in my favorites bar.
Archaeology was my major. I've always kept a layman's interest in it.
