I am from SW Wisconsin. I am looking to complete the 100 mile North Country Trail Challenge. I have already been to Pictured Rocks, Michigan. I have 40 miles remaining to complete my challenge. I am looking for either a straight 40 mile through hike or a place I can camp and hike 10 miles one way and back, camp and hike 10 miles up and back the other way.
I am considering the Superior Hiking Trail but not sure what part would be best? Are there any other suggestions out there that would be within a 5-6 hour drive for me? ie. MN, Wi or MI
Thanks!

Split rock river South spur to State Hwy 1 (Tettegouche State Park) is around 37 miles and a great hike with some great campsites. The Northern half of this hike is definitely a little more knee bending than the Southern half but all of it is pretty cool with some great vistas of Superior and some wonderful river hikes along Beaver River and Split rock River. I did this hike twice last year along with a hike from the Border to Grand Marais. I parked at Split Rock state park ( need a state park sticker) and shuttled up to Hwy 1. By the time you get back to the State park I'm guessing your hike will be a mile or two over 40. To park and double back in this same area would be to park at Penn street access in Silver Bay. One of my favorite spots on the trail is going by Bean and Bear Lakes. Let me know if you have any questions. I also have a pretty good excel file of mileage between campsites that I put together. This is a popular area especially on weekends so getting a campsite early is a good idea.
Have Fun!

Thank you wrecks for the suggestion. It looks like a great route. It looks like the bridge at Split Rock is out (since Oct 2016) but that would be at the tail end and I could just cut that off. I have ordered the maps from SHT website.

I liked your Pictured Rocks Video
There is an 120 mile section of NCT between Gordon Dam and Mellen. That is less crowded than Pictured Rocks, the SHT or Porcupine Mountains.
