Monday through Friday were all hard workout days and Saturday was going to be a rest day. I stopped by the mall for a cheap haircut and shuffling toward me as I entered was a t-shirt that proclaimed "Yay, Cardio! said nobody, ever". I couldn't discern the intent of the wearer, although it was somebody who probably had felt that way for 30 or 40 years. Was it truly disdain? Or was it a way of firing themselves up in a new fitness program?
In any case, I decided to abandon my rest plan and instead did my toughest cardio workout: 11 miles, with five miles of hill repeats with 2000 feet of elevation gain and about 2500 feet overall. Pushing up the last hill, I said to myself "Yay, Cardio". So there!

A couple of months several of us were waiting to check out at the time clock and were discussing hiking. Some of the younger lads had no idea about the local hiking trails or even the town bike/walking paths so I mentioned the main east/west trail was fun and easy and also at walks end was a little over three miles long. one of the guys said "isn't that the one that used to have the exercise stations? I said yup and he chimes in with this jewel...yeah I used to see people there doing the workouts...suckers. I smiled and looked him in the eye and said...yeah, that would include me too. He turned beet red, clocked out and walked away. Young enough to be careless, but old enough to know better.

I continually hope that the youngsters who ignore fitness now will eventually find their way into it. It's understandable that some can't truly grasp the benefit of exercise when the sort of automatic gains from simply growing are still a recent memory.
I'm really excited that my Dad recently started lifting weights for the first time at age 80. He's always been pretty active, but apart from daily walking, he never engaged in what most people would consider exercise.
