I'll be heading to the Bishop area for a short trip up Piute Pass next week. My usual custom is roll into Owens Valley late afternoon, grab my permit and some takeout food and find somewhere to camp near the trailhead. The Coppertop BBQ in Big Pine is one of my favorites but I'd like to try something new and in Bishop. Any recommendations? Please don't say Pizza Factory.

The Bishop Burger Barn, on the road out of town toward the TH. Though for the full experience you should eat there. Funky place.

I like the huge sandwiches at Erick Schat's Bakkery.

There is a Texas smokehouse on the east side of Hwy 395, maybe a block south of the USFS permit office. Very tasty food, though I've only eaten in house. I have also eaten at The Bishop Burger Barn, rec'd by rebeccad - funky place, very good burgers.

Amigo's Mexican Restaurant is a good one as well.

Good list, I'll keep it mind when I'm by there (need to hit the Toyota dealership for my 10k maintenance in the middle of my road trip).

I ended up stopping in the offbeat Burger Barn. The location is convenient (not that getting lost in Bishop is likely to happen) and the burger was very nice.

On a side note, two years ago my astronomy club went to Grandview Campground, just above Bishop, for a week long observing trip. Daytime exploring included the old mine and its relics, the bristle cone pine forest, and the ancient Native American archeological sites just north of Bishop which include Skyrock and 13 Moons plus numerous other petroglyph sites. Skyrock is not easy to find and not advertised but once found, and amazing piece of ancient history. Another side trip is to Bodie which was a lot of fun and warrants a return trip in the near future.

I've tried Chinese food as a take out. It is a big change from the usual. And depending what you like, it may get more than you to eat than what is in all those bags.

cuzimthedad...there's good reason that the locations of these petroglyph sites are not well advertised. It only takes one creepy person...

It only takes one creepy person... This site had a keeper... And yes, there is a reason. Some of the lower petroglyphs that are well know had been vandalized, actually chiseled out and taken. The lack of respect shown to our native lands, our national, state and local parks, is so much more today than it was 20 to 30 years ago.
