My girlfriend and I are planning our first backpacking trip together this fall. She has little experience with backpacking, but many days car camping. She will have a cast on her forearm/wrist for an injury (think carpel tunnel). There are no broken bones and we don't anticipate any pain. I have some prior experience backpacking (boy scouts as a kid), but I am a bit rusty and not a seasoned trekker. We were thinking of a 2 day starter trip to get comfortable with our, skills, gear, etc.
I have some questions about this: Can we backpack with one of us in a cast? I am almost positive that we CAN given the right hike, gear, etc. Are there any things we ought to watch out for? We were thinking some elements of backpacking would be more difficult with a cast, but ultimately doable. I am not worried about picking up extra slack if needed. We bought trekking poles (she could use one). The one thing we are concerned about is the hiking routes.
Are there hikes to recommend given our situation? We are from the Boston area. We recently day-hiked one of the presidential peaks in the White Mountains in NH (Lafayette). She had no cast. I felt that hike might be difficult to do with a cast and a fully-loaded overnight pack. Are there any good trails within a weekend trip's distance from Boston that would work well for a novice with a cast? Good views are key! We were considering Mt. Greylock, but aren't super familiar with that hike.
