Today was movie marathon day with Mtngrl. We started with "A Walk in the Woods" (Bill Speers joined us for that one). I thoroughly enjoyed the movie, although at first I had doubts about Robert Redford and Nick Nolte being able to pull it off. Turns out they were perfect for the film! It's a good, lighthearted movie, lots of laughs and a few serious moments. The backpacking girl Mary Ellen was way over the top, but hilarious.
"Meru" was our next stop. It was the opposite of "A Walk in the Woods," very intense and often mind-boggling. Climber Renan Ozturk's story is truly amazing (I won't go into detail and spoil it).
Both movies are worth watching.

Yep both good movies. A Walk in the Woods was laugh-out-loud funny and Meru was amazing. I thought Jimmy Chin's little "adventure" was an amazing story, as well as Renan O's.

Sounds like Walk in the Woods is worth seeing but...... No way a couple guys that age would be using those corrugated foam sleeping pads.

Lamebeaver, there were a few "glitches" in the movie, but it was still very funny and entertaining

I'll probably wait until it's out on DVD, but it's on my list.

No way a couple guys that age would be using those corrugated foam sleeping pads. I think when Bryson wrote the book, Thermarest wasn't around yet.

I think 2 people who didn't know the first thing about what they were doing would opt for whatever the salesman sold them.No way a couple guys that age would be using those corrugated foam sleeping pads.

I bought my first Thermarest in the spring of 1995 and used it until 2002. Mrs. big_load still uses her 1995 pad. There were still quite a few backpackers using blue foam pads back then, though.

Just saw it-I was a bit disappointed in that they changed the two funniest lines from the book: When Mary Ellen says "Pardon my French, but you're too fat", and best of all when she asks them their sign. I mean I just couldn't stop laughing when I read it. It was OK though; anything that has rocks, trees and cordura will entertain me.

I hadn't even heard of Meru, until a few day's ago, but it's getting rave reviews at my climbing forums.

My first Thermarest was an REI 50th Anniversary edition. I think that was in 1988 (might have been 1989, since I bought it in the REI attic, original Seattle store). Those green corrugated pads are actually more recent than Thermarest. And we still have 2 old blue foam pads, though they get used only as a workout mat now. Blue foam would have been more appropriate for them, I think--bet they used whatever was lying around.
