Hey all, I'm from Phoenix, and I go crazy in the summer months. I can't do my routine hikes in the local area. Hiking is my main source of activity. I go on runs, but now that the weather is up to the mid-90s early in the morning, that's out of the question. What do you do? I can't justify spending $20 a month on a gym membership just for a couple of months out of the year. I do at-home exercises, but these get old quickly. I might take some more backpacking trips up North. It's hard with lots freelance writings gigs coming my way. I'd love to hear from the community! - Steve, Creator of #HMPYG and Arizona News Organization

I bike into work at 6:30 when it's only 90 out. Then bike home at 4 when it's 110. Eight miles round trip. It keeps me in good enough shape for hiking and backpacking.

That's a good option, though biking in 110 doesn't seem too fun I work at various sites throughout the week, requiring me to drive. I also start my day at 8:30. I may have to just get up early and wander around on the bike.

I may have to just get up early and wander around on the bike. Getting up early and getting exercise before it gets hot is the only way to deal with a climate like that. Or move somewhere that has sane temperatures

I may have to just get up early Yes, early it is. During the 30 years I lived in AZ (Chandler) I would enjoy weekend summer dayhikes in the Supersitions, South Mountain, Camelback, and Piestewa Peak by getting on the trail around 4am and hiking if need be by headlamp and planning to be off the trail before it got excessively hot (generally before 10am). Also managed morning runs during the work week between 5 and 6am.

I live in Las Vegas and fortunate to have Mt. Charleston and the Spring Mountain Wilderness within a 40 minute drive of my house. While temps in the valley are in the 100s the highs at the trail heads are in the low eighties. Obviously even cooler as you climb. I start early to beat the crowds and keep the temperatures extremely comfortable.

For me personally I always go near the water, in your case if you have any lakes nearby, It always seems to be a bit cooler near the water
