Dennis Lewon, Editor-in-Chief, Backpacker Magazine:
Many thanks have been expressed to Steve (bp2go) for the current rendition of forums software. And without a doubt that appreciation is well deserved.
But as I understand Steve's account, it was you Dennis who gave the final go-ahead for this changeover. So I for one would like to express a hearty thanks for that decision. I think you have given the forums new life. And that is well worth our gratitude.
Though undeserved, probably no one has felt the criticism more than you for the failed attempt at new forums in the last few months. Though the developers failed you, it appears in the end you have not failed us — perhaps only a small sampling of your subscribers and readers.
I hope the current rendition of forum software can eventually be incorporated more closely with the magazine website and that, at the same time, we can continue to enjoy the functionality of this software. Admittedly, my view of it is as yet only superficial, but this version appears to be the best I've yet seen in my nine years as a forum member.
I would have liked to seen threads of previous years incorporated into the new version, but perhaps that is simply not feasible now. So I'll look forward and not dwell on the past.
I'm long-winded by nature, it seems, but perhaps this once that long-windedness can be devoted to a big "Thanks Dennis!"
— Travis

This version of the forums saved my magazine subscription. The opinions and information that I've found on the Backpacker forums over the years have been every bit as valuable to me as the printed magazine. I was so disheartened with what had happened to the forums in past months that I had every intention of canceling the magazine when it came time to renew. Providing a better forum with a chance to rebuild the community here is immensely appreciated. I think the number of people who have signed up here in the past couple of days reflects that.
Thanks to all those who made this happen--your efforts saved at least one long-time magazine subscription.

I agree with with both of the above. Thank you Dennis for trusting Steve and believing us when we said the forums were a community.

Adding my thank you Dennis. I really like the new forums! Like most in here, I often refer back to forum topics just as I refer back to the great articles in the magazine. So much good information for those of us who hike and backpack!

Agreed. Though I now have to lower myself to converse with common hiker trash.

Yes, good point Travis. Thank You Dennis!! I learned a lot from the old forum's and actually met some of the fabulous ladies when I left my comfort zone and went to CO for their snowshoe trek. When the forum collapsed I really missed it and the replacement forum wasn't a viable forum. I even let my subscription lapse since I felt the forum was just as important as the magazine. I think I'll renew Thanks again!

Thank You Dennis!
For years the I've worked in outdoor products retail and I've always recommended the magazine and forums as a legitimate source of knowledge for new backpackers.
For a few years now I've skipped mentioning the forums.
I'm much more comfortable mentioning them now with this new software.
Thanks again!
